A handful of representatives of the “White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” and the World Church of the Creator rallied in Austin this past weekend in support of Proposition 2, a ballot initiative altering the Texas Constitution to ban gay marriage. The dozen Klansmen were, according to this colorful report from The Austin Chronicle, a welcome foil for the thousands of counterprotesters who used their presence to make the point that the initiative wasn’t about marriage, but hate. Both sides of the debate on the proposition — which overwhelmingly passed Tuesday — were reportedly so upset with the presence of the Klan that the Texas Grand Dragon himself distanced his group from the measure, appealing to the public not to support Proposition 2 because the KKK supports it, but “because God does.”
