An independent expert has issued a new report to the United Nations, urging the assembly to protect the religious freedom of all prisoners, drawing particular attention to the “growing number” of allegations of religious abuse of detainees and prisoners. The report documents the 75 different communications written by the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Asma Jahangir, to 35 countries about such alleged violations. The breakdown of the notices was approximately one-half to the Asia-Pacific region, a third to Europe and North America, 12 percent to the Middle East, 9 percent to Africa, and none to Latin America. Of the list of 15 countries that Jahangir would like to visit for further investigation, only four responded with invitations. The U.S., which was among the 15, has not yet invited her.
