It’s a credit to our friend Steve Prothero’s new book, Religious Literacy, an exploration of the subject and argument for religious studies education, that it wins a very positive review in The Washington Post Book World from Susan Jacoby, the author of Freethinkers and an ardent defender of secularism. Of course, these two perspectives need not clash, but all too often they do, which is why we’re impressed that Steve was able to win Jacoby’s approval. Steve is also the subject of an even more glowing profile in Newsweek — “The Gospel of Prothero” — the author of which, Lisa Miller, is remiss only in failing to note that Steve is a Newsweek blogger and failing to explain why Steve decided that since he’d been raised a Christian, he could never be a “proper Buddhist.” Better not say that around Steven Seagal, the most religiously literate tulku, action star, and alleged mobster in America.
