Faced with a growing number of injuries and potential deaths from backstreet abortions in Iran (of which there are at least 80,000 per year), religious conservative lawmakers have decided to ease the strict prohibitions on abortion which only allow for the procedure when the mother’s life is in danger. Their solution? Legislation that would increase a woman’s reproductive options and help ensure safe medical procedures? Changes that take into account the situation of unmarried mothers facing persecution, rape victims, or those who are simply too poor to feed another child? Nope. The MP’s compromise proposal would only change the current law to allow abortions in cases where the fetus has a disability or condition that would impose a great financial burden on the family. What a trade: keeping women powerless to control their own bodies by declaring the intrinsically lesser value of the disabled. Who couldn’t have a problem with that?
