The Ten Commandments and PBS, abstinence education and Revelations, the Justice Department’s “religious rights” unit and Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, Ashley Smith, Dennis Rader, Terry Ratzman and, of course, Terri: Frank Rich is pissed about it all. But beyond just expressing his disgust with the Christian right, again, Rich’s latest essay offers a decent beginner’s survey of this month’s God wars, drawing a neat line between the various outrages-du-jour to create a passable sketch of “the God racket.” Where there’s a racket, there’s racketeers, and Rich traces their lineage from the press-stunt-movie-promoting Cecille B. DeMille doling out monuments to hype his epic, The Ten Commandments, to the press-stunt-self-promoting politicians rushing for a picture at Terri Schiavo’s bedside, to ensure their electability. “At a time when government, culture, science, medicine and the rule of law are all under threat from an emboldened religious minority out to remake America according to its dogma, the half-forgotten show business history of The Ten Commandments provides a telling back story.”
