The National Committ for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP), a self-described watchdog group that promotes “public accountability” from foundations, grant-givers and private donors, has released a new report following the money trail between conservative foundation grandmakers and evangelical culture warriors promoting “traditional” stances on issues such as abortion, gay marriage, stem cells, Ten Commandment displays and school prayer. The report, “Funding the Culture Wars,” analyzes $168 million given to evangelical grantees between 1999 and 2002 and, according to NCRP deputy director Jeff Krehely, raises questions about the accountability of religious nonprofits engaging in such political activities. Among the reports’ findings were that: 10% of the total grant money went to groups fighting same-sex marriage (including Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council); 41% were given as general operating support “to build the advocacy capacity of their grantees”; money given for international mission work was used 2:1 for proselytizing over humanitarian aid.
