The Vatican has issued a 111-page guide, titled “Dignity of Marriage,” revising the procedure of annulments so that they are slightly easier to obtain. The guidelines ease the requirements of a church appeals court to approve of annulments granted at a lower level by allowing them to approve for a different reason than that argued at the lower court. The guide was a disappointment for those who hoped that the revised procedures would encourage healing and honesty, rather than what some see as the imposed self-deception on those seeking an annulment and claiming “psychic incompetence” as a rationale, whether or not they actually believe that to have been the case.
