The Church of England’s general synod, backed by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, has voted to disinvest from the U.S. Caterpillar company as part of its decision to disinvest from corporations that profit off Israel’s occupation of Palestine. The Church has invested 2.5 million pounds in Caterpillar, Inc., which manufactures armored earth-moving equipment used by the Israeli government to bulldoze Palestinian homes and agricultural land (though also, reports The Times Online, by Palestinians rebuilding their own houses), and which has been singled out by the United Nations for complicity in human rights abuses.
