After a year’s debate, a Michigan school district has decided not to allow an elective Bible class that would have been based on materials from the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools. Officials at Frankenmuth Public Schools said that though the proposed class appeared to present the Bible “‘as’ history and literature,” it went “‘beyond talking about religion and becomes faith-based.'” The course was proposed a year ago by two parents, who collected 1,200 parents’ and students’ signatures in support of the Bible-based curriculum. During a school board hearing on the matter, arguments broke out between a supporter and an avowed atheist opposed to the course.
