Michael Marcavage, the litigious 25-year old head of Repent America and near-martyr in the “Philly Four/Five” case, is no doubt happy to find himself back in the spotlight as jury selection for a federal lawsuit regarding events at Temple University in 1999 began today. Marcavage, a Temple graduate, is suing his alma mater for allegedly attempting to commit him to a mental institution for psychiatric evaluation after he protested a staging of the controversial play, Corpus Christi (in which Jesus is portrayed as gay). According to Steve Crampton, an American Family Association lawyer involved with the case, the psychiatric evaluation was a violation of Marcavage’s first amendment right to religious freedom. The sympathetic Agape Press gives no details on what actions, if any, led to the “committment,” but as the trial is expected to last all week, more fun facts should come soon.
