Last September we noted the death of D. James Kennedy, a leader of Christian conservatism in America. More important to our concerns here at The Revealer, we noted the lack of notice Kennedy’s death received in the mainstream media despite the fact that Kennedy was an architect of the Christian Right with access to many powerful lawmakers and an enormous number of followers. Today, Bishop John Gimenez died. Gimenez, like Kennedy, was a founder of the modern Christian Right, and a man who retained the loyalty and affection of uncounted numbers of Christian conservatives who considered him a leader more important than any member of congress. So what kind of coverage does Gimenez rate in the mainstream media? Well, the Virginian-Pilot noticed. And so far, that’s it. The rest of the press takes a pass. That’s a big mistake. Journalism doesn’t just bring us the news, it reminds us of recent and relevant history. Unfortunately, it also tend to settle on a few talking heads and write history according to whomever returns their phone calls.
