Greenfield: The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life has published a report on Pentecostalism and other charismatic movements based on surveys conducted in ten countries where such brands of Christianity are prominent. The executive summary of the study states, “Despite the rapid growth of the renewalist movement in the last few decades, relatively little is known about the religious, political and civic views of individuals involved in these groups.” Although none of the initial findings are suprising — speaking in tongues, divine healing, Biblical literalism, and anti-homosexual sentiments are prevalent throughout — the report is nonetheless significant because it demonstrates the widening influence of the “renewalist” movement on both global politics and on other Christian denominations.
