Last week The Christian Century reported that the Church of the Brethren, a pacifist church which has historically opposed military service, announced that it would comply with a request from the Selective Service to institute an “alternative service” program for conscientious objectors if the military draft is reinstated. The Selective Service has consistently denied that a draft is planned, but they paid repeated visits to the church, encouraging Brethren leaders to “dust off” the church’s longstanding draft-alternative domestic service projects.
