The sleeping giant — err, make that mid-sized man; no, make it “herd of cats” — responds to the sound of its name and decides to try to live up to its frightful reputation. Yes, the atheists are organizing. After being vilified by the Vatican and Campaign ’04, and having their name used as an insult for anyone to the left of Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum, humanists and atheists mean to boost their profile in 2005 with a World Atheist Conference in India this January and a Humanist World Congress in Paris next July. As yet, there’s no word on whether they plan to propose a new word to describe their particular persecution.
