Ann Neumann: The British media had been impatiently waiting for Anglican Rowan Williams, the notoriously outspoken Archbishop of Canterbury, to kick the Catholic Church while it’s down in the mire of pedophilia charges; so much so that, according to Bishop Alan, they’ve selected a clip from a recent panel discussion that distorts the Archbishop’s meaning. In the course of a 45 minute discussion about church structure which included, among others, author Philip Pullman and Muslim academic Mona Siddiqui, Williams stated, “And an institution so deeply bound into the life of a society, suddenly becoming, suddenly losing all credibility – that’s not just a problem for the Church, it is a problem for everybody in Ireland.”BBC found a number of Catholic leaders who were “disheartened” and “stunned” by the extracted comment. Williams has since apologized.
