The New York Times points out that while the government of Brazil is trying to respond to the murder of Dorothy Stang with a new ban on logging in 20 million acres of the Amazon, the creation of two new federally protected forests, and an influx of troops to keep the peace in the state of Pará, at least four more rural leaders have been slain since Sister Dorothy was killed (on top of 1,000 killed between 1985 and 1996), and only five people have gone to prison for the deaths.
