A proposed statue of Califia, the mythical Amazon queen and namesake for the state of California, seems a likely pit-stop for the culture warriors. The monument, to be erected in Turlock, California, has already inspired a few letters to the editor. One letter asks whether Turlockians would rather worship an Amazon queen or the Prince of Peace; another calls the first letter-writer a member of the Taliban; and a third gives this history, which should comfort all: “Yes, Califia was an Amazon queen who at one time helped the Turks in a war against the Christians. During the battle she was captured by the Christians, married a Spaniard and eventually was taught Christianity. She gave up all of her gold and treasure to her husband and lived happily ever after.” (Goodness knows you don’t want a pagan queen spending her own dough.)
