Jay Bakker’s going out on a limb for The Gays. In his new book, Fall to Grace: A Revolution of God, Self and Society, Bakker proclaims that homosexuality is not a sin.
While this may be a revelation (Bakker’s church is called Revolution NYC) for Cathleen Falsani, who reviews the book at Sojourners, and other evangelicals with gay friends, one can’t help but match up Bakker’s proclamation of tolerance and love to the rather all-male-all-straight-all-white leadership at his church and be disappointed.
Loving the sinner isn’t really enough for evangelicals if they still foster patronizing attempts to convert gays to a straight “lifestyle.” They’re going to have to find it in their hearts to love the sin too. Let’s see if Bakker takes the lead in more than just word.

Actually, jay Bakker’s church is RevolUtion, not RevelAtion. You may want to fix that second paragraph.

Hey, thanks for the shout out! I’ve been volunteering for Revolution for close to three years now.
It has been over 5 years since Jay first came out on the issue of homosexuality, and our position has not changed since then. So the good news is, you don’t have to wait and see if we have remained true to our word. You can ask any of the gay members of Revolution about their experiences with us, and they’d all say the same thing.
Pastor Jay and Reverend Vince are the co-pastors of Revolution. They are both white, straight and male, so technically you are correct in your description of our leadership. We are very aware of this- by inviting numerous guest speakers from every walk of life, we believe we have done a good job of addressing this issue. You can find an archive of our past sermons, including those of our guest speakers, at revolutionnyc.com/media.
Thanks again for checking out what we’re doing. Please stay in touch!

Paolo – I skimmed the list of speakers on the podcast – 99% are white males that self-identify as straight. Wondering where the diversity is here. Still waiting …

As a gay believer in Christ I could care less that Jay is white straight male and those who speak at Revolution NY are 99% of the guest speakers are the same. He is preaches that all people are loved by God. Jay welcomes all in his church. You may find many churches with more diversity in there leadership where gays are not welcomed. To be diversity means nothing if I am not welcomed. When all are accepted in all churches then we will have genuine love and diversity will happen.
