He’s run through anti-semitism (The Passion of the Christ), classism (restraining order against a homeless man?!) and now — it’s not a new saw — racism. HuffPo, the LA Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle are all reporting that Gibson’s been caught on tape using the N-word while slandering his former girlfriend and, uh, baby mama.
The Revealer spent a lot of time covering Gibson’s media melees over the past few years, including the release of The Passion. We’ve combed through our archives for some Gibson classics so you don’t have to:
The Dolorous Passion of Cartman – April 5, 2004
Gibson Suffers On – October 8, 2004
Mel Gibson’s Election Day Black List – November 2, 2004
Bush & Gibson, Sittin’ in a Tree – December 16, 2004
This is What Christian Film Criticism Looks Like – February 16, 2005
Passion, Year One – March 1, 2005, by Jeff Sharlet

‘The Passion of the Christ’ is not anti-semitic. I saw it and I’m a keen non Jewish supporter of Israel (I lived there for 8 years) and general Jewish affairs. It didn’t strike me as anti-semitic. How can people think this? What evidence is there?
Gibson doesn’t like Jews much, lots of people are like that. Many Jews don’t like Christianity or Christians, but there are never any stories in the media about this. Why?
People in general should calm down and mind their own business about other people. Liking Jews is not compulsory … I tend to do so, but that is my view. Other people can have other views. Gibson shouldn’t be cursorily defamed as an anti-semite just because we think he is a dork … which, increasingly he is looking. All his own work.

Shame on both of them. I strongly believe that they are both at fault. First Mel shouldn’t talk to the mother of his child that way, and second she should not have released those tapes to the public. They should take a step back and reanalyse the situation, they are both wrong and should think about the kid. When Lucia gets older she will naturally step back and have to consider what happened. I think Mel Gibson might be mentally ill and I really hope he gets help.
